Queer Voices: Prose, Poetry, and Pride - 2019

Nate’s essay, “The Invisible Man,” is featured in this anthology, published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press. This essay addresses the ways in which current American culture and politics are serving to silence the voices of individuals with disabilities, and perpetuating gender stereotypes that promote unhealthy models of masculinity.

Dying to Hang with the Boys - 2019

Exploring the ways gender transition, identity, physical disability, addiction and recovery, and mental health all intersect and complicate each other, this debated book has been described as both ‘necessary’ and as ‘contagion.’ Going beyond memoir, Dying delves into a number of current social justice issues including the dialogue around suicide, expressions of masculinity, the politics of identity, disability rights, diversity and inclusion, and use of ECT therapy. An independent work as well as a sequel to his first memoir, this book has generated extreme feedback from readers. As a result, it’s become a must read for anyone working in health and human services, law, law enforcement and corrections, or with an interest in LGBTQ or disability rights.

Running on a Mind Rewired - 2012

Nate's first book, published under his former female name, Jennifer, tackles youth and young adult mental health issues, addressing the consequences of addiction and head injuries. This best-selling book was used in high school and college curricula, serving as a teaching tool in hospitals and treatment centers around the country.

This book, if released in 2019, would likely be met with disdain for so openly addressing mental illness, suicide, and the interplay it has with brain injury, neurological illness, and behavior. It would likely receive further push back for feeding into what is now considered to be a stereotypical disability narrative of inspiration and hope in the face of adversity.
